A Trailblazer in Emergency Medicine and Healthcare Leadership
Dr. John Lumpkin, M.D., M.P.H., is a pioneering figure in the medical field whose contributions have left an indelible mark on both emergency medicine and the healthcare landscape. Dr. Lumpkin was the first African American trained in the field of emergency medicine, following the completion of his residency at the University of Chicago. Afterwards, Dr. Lumpkin practiced emergency medicine and taught medical students and residents at prestigious institutions such as the University of Chicago and Northwestern University.
After receiving a M.P.H. in 1985 from University of Illinois School of Public Health, Dr. Lumpkin served as the first African-American director of the Illinois Department of Public Health (and the first African American to lead a state health agency of more than 1,300 employees). During his tenure, he spearheaded numerous initiatives to enhance public health services and address healthcare disparities across the state. Notably, he led efforts to improve programs related to overall patient health, emergency and bioterrorism preparedness, infectious disease prevention, immunization, and others.
Dr. Lumpkin’s commitment to equal access to healthcare disparities has been one of the cornerstones of his career. In a 2020 LinkedIn article entitled “In healthcare, not all are equal,” he wrote “If we truly desire a free, healthy and prosperous society, those that have been denied true equal rights must not only have access to these rights, but also access to an affordable, equitable and culturally competent health care system.”
Dr. Lumpkin has also been involved in bringing change to non-medical aspects of health and well-being including food security, housing, and transportation. A great example of this is his work with Blue Cross NC focused on initiatives to help underserved communities get better access to healthy food—which ultimately leads to improvements in the long-term health of adults and children.
In addition to his clinical and administrative roles, Dr. Lumpkin has been actively engaged in various professional organizations and committees dedicated to advancing healthcare policy and practice. He is a distinguished member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies and a fellow of esteemed medical societies such as the American College of Emergency Physicians and the American College of Medical Informatics. Dr. Lumpkin has also held leadership positions in organizations such as the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics, the US Department of Agriculture’s Council on Maternal, Infant and Fetal Nutrition, and more.
Throughout his career, Dr. Lumpkin’s contributions have been widely recognized. He has received numerous awards and accolades for his dedication to public health and healthcare leadership, including the Arthur McCormack Excellence and Dedication in Public Health Award, the Jonas Salk Health Leadership Award, and the Leadership in Public Health Award. Beyond the accolades, he has been instrumental in shaping healthcare policy and practice, advocating for equity, diversity, and inclusion in healthcare as a whole.
Dr. Lumpkin currently serves as Senior Vice President and Director of the Health Care Group at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, an organization dedicated to improving health and health equity in the United States.
